Chapter 17
We have been avoiding navy ships for days now. The closer we grow to Fort Acker, the denser the traffic becomes. Every blue bird in Goran is coming and going from this place right now.
We have raised decoy flags to appear like any other innocent ship flying blue birds, but if any of the navy ships get close enough to flag us down, we would be found out in short order.
It has made it easier to accept the decision Michael and I came to about avoiding Fort Acker. It is clear enough to me that learning of Cassandra Foleyâs destination was only the work of fates trying to derail me. This is no place for the lot of us.
Still, I cannot shake the feeling that something is amiss.
I scan the horizon in every direction from my spot on the foot of the foremast. Below, Zachary is staring straight up at me from the deck, talking to Bennett, who glances between me and Zachary. I do not even have time to make guesses about what they are talking about before Zachary climbs up.
He and I have not spoken since we left Red Water over a week ago. He has followed me up the lines before, though not often. He fears the great height of it and has no knowledge of the rig. Each time he attempts it he appears a little less nervous but he still clutches the yardarm in a white-knuckled grip.
Coming to my side, he tries to hold onto the ship with the same nonchalance I do before giving up and holding fast to every reliable surface in reach. âI wish you went elsewhere to clear your head, Jane.â
It is nice that despite our distance of late, he still speaks to me as a friend when there is a time and place for it. It feels good to know he could guess I needed him in this moment and climbed up after me. âI wish I could. I have decided I hate this small ship and I am seeking another. Until then, aloft is where I will stay.â
Zachary is unconvinced. He knows as well as anyone who has sailed beside me that no matter the shipâs size, purpose, or history, I would remain above the deck, uncomfortable and wind-chapped more often than not.
âIs that what you search for up here? I thought it was men in blue. For someone so set on chasing the Navy, you are avoiding it very well.â
âI do not chase the Navy, I chase Foley.â The name of the naval captain dies on my tongue. I do not know whether I still chase him or not. My purpose surrounding him grows murkier by the day. âAs for new ships, maybe. I will know the right one when I see it.â
âI would know what has chased you up here.â Zachary remains impossible to dissuade from my side.
Though Bennett and I have come to some agreement on where we should lay blame, I do not wish to speak to him of what presses on my heart today.
